About the River Otter:
The North American River Otter (Lontra canadensis) is Colorado’s largest aquatic weasel, and a vital keystone species. They can be found on the western slope and in various river basins, including the Dolores, Colorado, Gunnison, and Piedra Rivers. Their populations were almost decimated by overtrapping in the early 20th century; however, populations are now growing and thriving due to successful conservation and reintroduction efforts. However, they are still listed as a threatened species in Colorado.
Size- Length: 2.5-5’ Weight: 10-33 pounds
Diet: Fish, crayfish, and amphibians. Occasionally, aquatic invertebrates, small mammals, and birds or fruit.
Fun fact: Their populations serve as an indicator of a healthy ecosystem.
